June Rainfall Nearly Double District-wide Average

West Palm Beach, FL – After experiencing drought-like conditions throughout the dry season, the start of the wet season in June ushered in extreme rainfall, which dropped nearly double the amount of rain normally seen in the month across South Florida. The significant rainfall caused high water emergencies in the southern and central parts of the system, particularly the water conservation areas.

SFWMD, USACE Take Emergency Action To Protect Wildlife From High Water

West Palm Beach, FL – Heavy June rainfall throughout South Florida, with some areas receiving more than 2.5 times the average, has led to dangerously high water levels in Water Conservation Area 3A in western Miami-Dade and Broward counties. With approval from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) is using structures not previously available as well as taking several other steps to send as much water possible to tide to protect wildlife in the conservation areas.

Massive West Coast Restoration Project Makes Big Progress

LaBelle, FL - Bulldozers have been piling up massive mountains of earth and construction crews have been working since last year to build a restoration project crucial to the health of the Caloosahatchee River and Estuary. The C-43 West Basin Reservoir remains on schedule with a steady stream of funding championed by Gov. SFWMD Advocates State's Rights, Wins in Federal Court

Atlanta, GA - The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) this week experienced a crucial victory in court to protect the right to representation in lawsuits that will impact the use of water in South Florida.

The 11th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals upheld a lower court's decision to dismiss a lawsuit filed more than a decade ago by several environmental activism groups including the Florida Wildlife Federation and the Conservancy of Southwest Florida.

SFWMD Python Elimination Program Grows Bigger And More Aggressive With Broward and Collier Counties Expansion

West Palm Beach, FL - The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) Python Hunters will be back on the prowl for snakes starting tomorrow, June 17, and their hunting grounds are widening. The SFWMD Governing Board last week renewed the Python Elimination Program after the pilot phase eliminated 158 snakes in a little over two months.

The Governing Board has also expanded the area where python hunters are allowed access to now include Broward and Collier counties. Previously hunting was only allowed in Miami-Dade County.

SFWMD Prepared for Weekend Rainfall, Working With Local Drainage Districts to Prevent Flooding

West Palm Beach, FL – Summer storms and the outer edges of a tropical disturbance in the northwest Caribbean are forecast to bring as much as 2-8 inches of rain across South Florida over the next five days. The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) has already prepared its flood control system to handle additional water from local governments, drainage districts and homeowner associations.
