SFWMD Governing Board Sets the Stage for Expansion of Lake Hicpochee Shallow Hydrologic Enhancement Project

West Palm Beach, FL – The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) Governing Board today approved the purchase of 2,510 acres in Glades County that will expand the ongoing Lake Hicpochee Shallow Hydrologic Enhancement Project. This project will benefit the Caloosahatchee River and Estuary and watershed by adding opportunities for water storage.

SFWMD, FWC, USACE, Florida Forest Service Conducting Prescribed Burn on Lake Okeechobee Today

Moore Haven, FL – Crews from the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD), Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), Florida Forest Service and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) will burn up to 5,000 acres of dried marsh along the southwestern rim of Lake Okeechobee today. This is all part of the ongoing effort to restore the ecology and habitat of the lake.

Golden Gate Main Canal Tree Clearing Project to Improve Flood Protection for Families and Businesses in Collier County

Naples, FL - To help ensure flood protection for Collier County residents, the South Florida Water Management District's (SFWMD) Big Cypress Basin will begin work this week to clear trees and overgrown vegetation from the banks of a 6-mile stretch of the Golden Gate Main Canal. In recent weeks, Basin staff has been reaching out to property owners along the first phase of the project to keep them informed about this public safety measure.

SFWMD Submits EAA Storage Reservoir Tentatively Selected Plan for Federal Approval

West Palm Beach, FL – The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) submitted its plan to build the Everglades Agricultural Area (EAA) Storage Reservoir for federal approval.

A Post Authorization Change Report (PACR) seeking to build the reservoir as part of the congressionally approved Central Everglades Planning Project (CEPP) was submitted to the Assistant Secretary of the Army (ASA) for Civil Works today in accordance with state law.

Independent Review Concludes EAA Reservoir Plan is Technically Sound

West Palm Beach, FL – An independent external peer review released this week found that the South Florida Water Management District's (SFWMD) plan for the Everglades Agricultural Area (EAA) Storage Reservoir is technically sound and based on a foundation of successful scientific practices and engineering. SFWMD's Tentatively Selected Plan (TSP) for the proposed EAA Storage Reservoir would reduce damaging discharges to the northern estuaries, deliver clean water for Everglades restoration and meet water quality standards.
