Did you know the South Florida Water Management District provides access to the science and data used to drive important decisions about the protection of South Florida’s water resources?
The 2022 South Florida Environmental Report highlights a historic year of progress on critical Everglades restoration projects, and includes extensive data and research used to guide key water management decisions.
The report also documents water quality, scientific and engineering accomplishments in the Kissimmee Basin, Lake Okeechobee, Everglades and South Florida’s coastal areas during the 2021 Water Year (May 1, 2020-April 30, 2021).
Major accomplishments include:
- Achieving 44 significant milestones over the past three years to improve water management for the benefit of more than 9 million South Floridians.
- Continuing momentum for sending more water south and reducing harmful discharges.
- Working to improve and maintain water quality and reduce nutrients entering the Everglades.
- Making major progress to increase water storage north, south, east and west of Lake Okeechobee. During Water Year 2021, 35 water storage projects were operational across the Northern Everglades watersheds.
- Advancing science-based metrics to ensure the resiliency of the region’s water resources and ecosystems. The South Florida Water Management District uses these metrics to inform resilience planning that ensures the District’s infrastructure can respond to changing conditions like increased sea level rise and rainfall.
The South Florida Water Management District is pleased to share the data and information in the 2022 South Florida Environmental Report, and we are excited to see the momentum continue to grow -- now and in the future.
