Lake Okeechobee Conditions May Require Temporary Navigational Lock Closures to Protect Public Safety

Four locks on north shore of lake could be closed and hours restricted at fifth lock for safety if warranted by conditions. 

For boaters navigating to and from Lake Okeechobee, the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) may soon close four navigation locks on the north shore and reduce the operating hours of a fifth lock for safety reasons. Injury and lock damage could occur when boats pass through these structures when lake levels water are outside of designated safety limits.

As part of its ongoing efforts to help prevent the potential spread of COVID-19 and protect public safety, the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) will temporarily suspend all camping on District-managed lands for 60 days, effective tomorrow, Thursday, March 19.

MOORE HAVEN, Fla. - In an effort to manage vegetation and restore habitat in Lake Okeechobee, the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD), Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), Florida Forest Service and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) are planning two prescribed burns on the southwest shore of the lake this week.

On March 4, the agencies plan to burn 15,884 acres from Grass Island to Cochran's pass near Clewiston.

Jennifer Reynolds Named Director of Ecosystem Restoration and Capital Projects

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Today, Jennifer Reynolds was named the Director of Ecosystem Restoration and Capital Projects for the South Florida Water Management District. Reynolds retired from the U.S. Army in January and most recently served as the Deputy Commander for South Florida with the Jacksonville District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. During that time, she built a strong reputation of working collaboratively with the public and stakeholder groups.

Big Cypress Basin Board Encourages Public to Participate in Business Meeting
