SFWMD Governing Board Approves Agreements with USACE to Ensure Federal Cost Share for EAA Storage Reservoir

SFWMD Continues Efforts to Protect WCAs After Record Wet Season

West Palm Beach, FL – From June through October 2017, an average of 51.64 inches of rain fell District-wide, a record for wet season rainfall. The previous record for this five-month period was set in 1947 when hurricanes caused widespread flooding that led to the formation of the Central and Southern Florida Flood Control District, the predecessor to the South Water Management District (SFWMD).

West Palm Beach, FL - Frogs are an important indicator species  when it comes to measuring the success of ecosystem restoration. 

And South Florida Water Management District scientist Brent Anderson sounds like he knows what he's talking about.

For more than 10 years, Anderson has been studying the impacts of Kissimmee River restoration on a dozen species of frogs. Judging by the flocks of wading birds feeding on prey of the hopping persuasion, success is sticking like a fly on a bullfrog's tongue. 

SFWMD Preparing for Weekend Rain from Cold Front, Tropical System

West Palm Beach, FL – South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) water managers are preparing the flood control system for expected weekend rainfall, the result of a cold front interacting with a possible tropical system. The system is expected to drop an average of 1-3 inches of rain over areas south and east of Lake Okeechobee, including coastal Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties. The local maximum rainfall is forecast to be as high as 5 inches.

SFWMD Governing Board Extends Crucial Everglades Restoration Research

West Palm Beach, FL – The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) Governing Board today approved a three-year research contract with Florida International University (FIU) to test a crucial Everglades restoration hypothesis in the District's Loxahatchee Impoundment Landscape Assessment (LILA) facility in western Palm Beach County.

S-131 Lock on Lake Okeechobee to Temporarily Close for Two Days

Okeechobee, FL – For boaters navigating to and from Lake Okeechobee, the S-131 lock at Lakeport in Glades County is scheduled to be temporarily closed for maintenance on Monday, Oct. 16, and Tuesday, Oct. 17.

The S-131 is the last of four navigation locks on the north shore of the lake to undergo routine maintenance. The work was originally scheduled for Sept. 7 but was postponed due to preparations for Hurricane Irma.
