Governing Board Declares Water Reuse Week May 19-25

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) Governing Board today joined several utilities and local governments including Okeechobee, Palm Beach and Broward counties and the Old Plantation Water Control District in Broward County, in declaring May 19-25 as Water Reuse Week. The resolution urges local governments, utilities and businesses to implement water reuse programs to help protect future water supply of 8.1 million South Florida residents and millions of visitors.

SFWMD Expanding Access at the A-1 Flow Equalization Basin for Public Recreation

SOUTH BAY, Fla. - The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) is increasing recreational access at the A-1 Flow Equalization Basin (FEB) starting Friday, April 26. The A-1 FEB is a popular site for recreation including fishing and bird watching. The area is open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. 

Due to the popularity of this area, special use licenses will no longer be required to drive licensed vehicles within the A-1 FEB. Trailers are not allowed on the site; only boats using electric trolling motors will be allowed.

SFWMD Welcomes Governing Board Member - Ron Bergeron Sr.

Ron Bergeron was raised in Davie, Florida, a small town with a population of about 500. His mother and father owned a small grocery store. From a young age, his parents instilled the importance of being kind, earning respect and having strong work ethic. Most important of all was giving to charity no matter the size of the contribution. Bergeron’s grandfather was a game warden in the Florida Everglades and taught him the importance of conservation and protecting the environment. Bergeron was raised to appreciate, celebrate, and preserve the local culture and history.

SFWMD to Conduct Hurricane Freddy Drill

West Palm Beach, FL - The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) will conduct its annual "Hurricane Freddy" drill on Wednesday, April 17 as part of its preparation for the upcoming rainy season.

SFWMD has conducted the annual Hurricane Freddy drill since the mid-1990s. The drill, which involves District staff in the Emergency Operations Center responding to a fictional hurricane scenario impacting South Florida, begins with a briefing at 8 a.m. and ends at 5 p.m.
