GENERAL SUBJECT MATTER TO BE DISCUSSED:
The Kissimmee River Restoration Project restores over 40 square miles of river/floodplain ecosystem including 43 miles of meandering river channel and 27,000 acres of wetlands. The project is a joint partnership between the District and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). An integral component of the restoration is the protection of water needed for fish and wildlife as required by the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP). The water identified for the natural system will be protected through a water reservation as authorized by Florida law. The purpose of this workshop is to discuss the revised supporting technical document, which identifies the water needed for the protection of fish and wildlife, the revised draft reservation rule text, and the associated permitting criteria in the “Applicant’s Handbook for Water Use Permit Applications within the South Florida Water Management District”. There will also be a discussion on the public comments received.
