Hurricane Ian Update: Chairman Chauncey Goss and Director Drew Bartlett Provide Update on SFWMD’s Ongoing Response Efforts

South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) Governing Board Chairman Chauncey Goss and Executive Director Drew Bartlett provided an update this afternoon from the SFWMD’s Emergency Operations Center on the District’s ongoing response efforts to Hurricane Ian.

South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) Executive Director Drew Bartlett provided an update this afternoon from the SFWMD’s Emergency Operations Center on the District’s ongoing response efforts to Hurricane Ian.

The SFWMD continues working to reduce regional lake levels in the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes system and provide relief to impacted communities. Today, SFWMD field crews fixed damaged infrastructure in Orange County and continue to install pumps in the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes system.

South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) Executive Director Drew Bartlett provided an update this evening from the SFWMD’s Emergency Operations Center on the District’s ongoing response efforts to Hurricane Ian.

The District continues to assist local governments and drainage operators to reduce flooding within impacted areas. Today, Director Bartlett assessed the high water levels in the Upper Kissimmee Chain of Lakes and deployed pumps to move water south through the interconnected lake system to reduce flooding.

South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) Executive Director Drew Bartlett provided an update today from the SFWMD’s Emergency Operations Center on the District’s continued response to Hurricane Ian.

Hurricane Ian is one of the most powerful hurricanes to ever impact Florida, and the storm is expected to continue to bring significant rainfall, storm surge, strong winds and tornadoes to the region. Rainfall from the storm is expected to result in a significant and rapid rise in canals, lakes, ponds and rivers throughout the District.

Preparing for Hurricane Season

Tomorrow, June 1 is the start of the annual Atlantic hurricane season. The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) works year-round to protect communities from flooding and ensure South Florida's primary flood control system is ready for storms. South Florida has an interconnected drainage system, and flood control in South Florida is a shared responsibility between the District, county and city governments, local drainage districts, HOAs, and residents.
