The vast wetland site contains a public access point for hiking, biking, bird watching and nature photography. The facility also features covered information kiosks, directional signs and paved parking areas, providing access to nature-seeking hikers and bicycle riders to explore and enjoy the vast, open marsh. This site is the first STA to have bank fishing allowed inside the levees. Fishing is a "catch and release" program. The recreation area will be open from dawn until dusk on Fridays through Mondays.
Bird Watching tours are scheduled on STA5 in cooperation with the Hendry-Glades Audubon Society. For scheduled bird watching dates and times, please contact Margaret England at 863-674-0695 for STA5, or click here.
After years of preparatory work by land managers, during October 2006 the federally endangered red-cockaded woodpecker was returned to the forest of the District's DuPuis Management Area located in Martin and Palm Beach Counties. In a cooperative venture by the District, the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and the US Fish and Wildlife Service, a pair of juvenile woodpeckers will be released each year for 5 consecutive years to re-establish this native bird on DuPuis. An additional pair of juveniles were just released in late 2009.
The Taylor Creek Stormwater Treatment Area is now open for hiking and biking recreational activities. For more information please contact the Okeechobee Service Center at 1-800-250-4200.
