Would you like to take a more active role in protecting water resources and our environment? As a volunteer, you can take a hands-on approach to improving recreational opportunities in your neighborhood or in your favorite areas. You or your community/professional group can propose a recreational project for lands in three categories: trails, fishing or boating.

Throughout our 16-county region, we have nine Service Centers with staff who work with local communities, businesses and governments. Look for the Service Center closest to you, and contact them to see if they can recommend volunteer opportunities in your area.

Are you 14 to 20 years old, curious about the region's water resources or the environment and wondering what scientists, engineers and other professionals do to protect and restore ecosystems?

By joining Explorer Post 57 you can interact with professionals in the field and explore some of South Florida's unique and fascinating ecosystems.

Parents, employees and other environmental professionals are also welcome to volunteer their time helping young people learn about the science, the adventure and the rewards of knowing more about our world and how they can make it better.

Recreation Project Volunteer Program

volunteering photoThe South Florida Water Management District works with many volunteer groups on projects to improve or expand recreational opportunities on the public lands we manage. Our goals for these lands are to provide basic facilities for access and interpretation, in a safe and healthy setting. We work to make recreational opportunities accessible to persons with disabilities.

Volunteer projects must fall under one of the three categories listed below, and must be approved by the South Florida Water Management District Governing Board. Groups are encouraged to meet with our staff to discuss a project before developing an official submittal.

Three volunteer project categories are:

  • Trails
  • Fishing
  • Boating

Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary

Known as the crown jewel of Audubon sanctuaries, Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is a spectacular and pristine mix of native plants and animals. Ancient 600-year-old cypress trees tower into the sky, shading the shallow swamp waters. Volunteers can be involved with protecting the swamp in many different areas of sanctuary operations. Working closely with Audubon employees, volunteers contribute countless hours and services. You, too, can be part of this family.
