The transition from the NGVD 29 to NAVD 88 will impact Florida in many positive ways.
First and foremost, the use of the more accurate measurements provided by NAVD 88 will improve the efficiency and reliability of water delivery systems. Since Florida is so flat, being able to more accurately measure the height of water, especially as it compares to the height of water many miles upstream or downstream, will allow for more efficient use of this important resource.
The cost of surveying will go down significantly, since newer and more cost effective GPS based survey methods will be able to be used to measure and set the heights of flood control structures, roads, buildings, and land boundaries.
Other benefits include:
Alert safety planners to evacuation routes that are slowly sinking and susceptible to flooding
Identify flood-prone areas to guide new construction and reconstruction projects in vulnerable areas.
Allow more efficient fertilizer and pesticide use and reduce costs to counter pollution from chemical runoff.
Allow aircraft to land more safely in low-visibility conditions
Evacuation routes can be better identified using GPS Technology supported by NAVD 88
