Who:
Everyone between the age of 14 & 20 with an interest in camping, canoeing, hiking and the environment. No experience neccesary.

Mission Statement:
To inspire youth to learn about and appreciate water resources and the environment by interacting with professionals in the field and exploring first hand some of South Florida's unique and fascinating ecosystems.

SFWMD HQ, 3301 Gun Club Road, West Palm Beach, FL

When:
7:00-8:30 pm, 2nd and 4th Thursday of every month (see Calendar)

Explorer Post 57 Fact Sheet

Purpose: Educate interested youth in the field of Water Resources and the Environment including careers and conservation in an individual and group atmosphere.

Membership: Explorers is open to youth, boys and girls, from 14 to 20 years of age. Each member must have completed the 8th grade. Youth members must be approved by the Post Advisor. The Post currently has 10 registered youth members. The range of youth members has been between 8 to 18 members at any given time. Adult members are over 21 years old and must be approved by the sponsoring organization SFWMD.

Career Development: The Post has a great group of professionals from the South Florida Water Management District who volunteer their time, to work with the youth on a regular basis. Tom Conboy Environmental Engineer, Ed Cronyn Environmental Scientist, Emily Hopkins Lead Hydrogeologist, Stuart Vanhorn Lead Senior Civil Engineer, and Mary Bowman Financial Analyst.

During the past four years the post has had at least one guest speaker per quarter. These speakers, each an expert in his or her field, have volunteered to share their knowledge and experiences with the post (see list of guest speakers).

Meetings: General Meetings are held on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the B-2 Okeechobee Conference Room. Officer meetings are held on the 1st Thursday of the month.

Weekend Activities: The post participates in a weekend activity once per month. Weekend activities include Service projects, environmental interpretation, camping, and canoeing (see list of activities). The number of people attending weekend activities has ranged from as few as six to as many as 18 people.
