The South Florida Water Management District has taken great strides to enhance and expand the recreational use program on District lands. Numerous access sites and related recreational facilities have been developed in cooperation with other state agencies, the federal government, counties, municipalities, and non-governmental organizations. Proper regulation of public use is essential to protect the natural and cultural resources of these lands and to avoid conflicts between users and/or user groups. To this end the District has adopted a public use rule which sets forth general rules and regulations applicable to District lands.
This website contains the latest revision to Chapter 40E-7, Part V, Florida Administrative Code, pertaining to public access to and recreational use of South Florida Water Management District Lands. The District has adopted this rule to capture all types of land designations within the District and determine allowable public recreational uses on each designated land type. Prior 40E-7 rules addressed public use on Management Areas only. This website has public use rules for Management Areas and rules adopted for public use on District Right of Ways, Stormwater Treatment Areas, Impoundment Areas, and Vacant Undesignated lands.
When appropriate, the District solicits the assistance of other governmental agencies and non-governmental organizations in the management of select land areas. In situations where a cooperating entity, such as the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission or the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, has its own rules and regulations for a specific tract of land, the District's regulations will supplement those of said entity.
