The Board's composition is also determined by law, and its membership should include:
2 from Miami-Dade County;
1 from Broward County;
1 from Palm Beach County;
1 from Collier, Lee, Hendry or Charlotte Counties;
1 from Glades, Okeechobee, Highlands, Polk, Orange or Osceola Counties;
2, appointed at large, from St. Lucie, Martin, Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade or Monroe Counties; and
1, appointed at large from Collier, Lee, Charlotte, Hendry, Glades, Osceola, Okeechobee, Polk, Highlands or Orange Counties.
No county should have more than 3 members on the Governing Board. Board members serve without pay, generally for a four-year term. The Board elects its own officers, including a chairman and vice-chairman.
Big Cypress Basin Board
The SFWMD is comprised of two major basins, the Okeechobee and the Big Cypress Basin, also known as the BCB. The BCB also has a Basin Board, with appointed members setting policy.
SFWMD Governing Board member Charles J. Dauray is the Ex-Officio Chairman of the Big Cypress Basin Board.
