(Florida Statute 373.073)
Members of the Governing Board have significant experience in one or more of the following areas, including but not limited to:
SFWMD is the oldest regional water management entity in the state. It began as the Central and Southern Florida Flood Control District in 1949, and gained it's new designation in 1972, with the enactment of the Florida Water Resources Act, which created five water management districts with responsibilities for managing and protecting regional water resources. In 1976, these districts were, in a constitutional amendment, given the authority to levy property taxes to help fund water resource management efforts.
More recent legislation, regarding land acquisition and management, permitting and environmental restoration and protection, added to the responsibilities of these regional state agencies.
