Guided by a vision to be the world's premier water resource agency, SFWMD is a government organization that protects a vast regional water system, which extends 240 miles from the Upper Chain of Lakes into the Kissimmee River and Lake Okeechobee, then south into the Everglades and Florida Bay.
A nine-member Governing Board--appointed by the Governor and approved by the Florida Senate--sets policy and provides overall direction for this agency, which is the oldest and largest of the state's five water management districts.
Our work involves:
Operating the primary flood-control system to make it possible for us to live and work safely in our communities.
Safeguarding our regional water supplies for people and the environment, for today and the future.
Ensuring water quality in the interconnected Kissimmee-Okeechobee-Everglades ecosystem, one of the most diverse in the world.
Moving forward aggressively with our commitment to restore and protect our natural systems.
