The annual employee appreciation picnic had a special theme this year, Watercolors. Held on February 16, 2008, it was attended by over 1200 employees, families and guests of the District. The concept was developed from the 2006 employee Diversity Calendar and the goal was to have fun, as well as provide an inclusive cross-cultural learning environment in celebration of the rich diversity of the District.
In addition to games and activities of all types (with a cultural theme, of course), there was a Global Village with regions including Africa, Asia, Canada, Caribbean, Europe, Latin America, United Kingdom/Ireland and USA. Other booths showcased Age & Disability Awareness and District services. A world map allowed employees and their guests to "pin" where they were culturally connected. And, of course, the Taste of Nations provided delicious dishes from around the world.
2008 Chili Cook-Off
The District held its annual Chili Cook-Off on March 20 and raised more than $1,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The society is the world's largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research, education and patient services. Since its founding in 1949, the society has invested more than $550.8 million for research specifically targeting blood cancers.
Women's History Month Celebration (March)
The District held its 5th annual Women's History Month event on March 5, 2008. This year's theme was Women's Art Women's Vision and provided a special opportunity to discover and celebrate women's visual arts in a variety of forms and mediums that help expand our perceptions of ourselves and each other. The traditional program panel consisted of women artist of the District. The key note address was given by Mary Ann Carroll, the only female in the Florida Highwaymen artist group and a 2004 inductee into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame. We also had the pleasure of hearing a musical selection by the District's former singing group the Aquatones and a wonderful Ecoart presentation given by Mary Jo Aagerstoun.
