The Governing Board appoints the agency's Executive Director (subject to approval by the Governor, and confirmation by the Florida Senate). The Executive Director carries out the Board's directives. The Assistant Executive Director serves as the agency's Chief Operating Officer and is responsible for decision making in the Executive Director's absence.

Ombuds & Open Government responds to inquiries and complaints regarding all District policies and practices. Ombudsman Carolyn L. Williams provides a neutral point of contact to address citizen issues and concerns.
Inspector General
John Williams the SFWMD Inspector General, is appointed by the Governing Board.
The Office of the Inspector General provides an independent review of the agency's operations -- through objective and professional audits, investigations, reviews, and evaluations of the economy, efficiency or effectiveness of taxpayer-financed programs.
