George L. Horne
Deputy Executive Director,
Operations & Maintenance Resources

George Horne was named Deputy Executive Director for Operations and Maintenance Resources in June 2002. He has held executive-level management positions in the District's public works area since July 2001.

In this role, he is responsible for overseeing operations and maintenance of the Central and Southern Florida Project, as well as other District water control and conveyance facilities. This water management system includes more than 2,300 miles of canals and levees, 2,200 water control structures, and 61 pump stations across the District's 16-county region. Operations and Maintenance activities include management of stormwater treatment areas; stewardship of 1.34 million acres of land; treatment of over 60,000 acres of vegetation yearly; management of a fleet of 1,000 vehicles and heavy equipment and emergency response teams; and organization of emergency response teams.

Mr. Horne has more than 35 years of District experience in water resource operations and maintenance. His career highlights include pump station design, automation and supervision, engineering management, team building and efficiency expertise. He has also been involved in planning for the Herbert Hoover Dike repairs.

From 1999 - 2001, Mr. Horne served as director of Operations & Maintenance Field Operations North. Prior to that, he was director of the Pump Station Division from 1993 to 1999, and assistant director from 1991 to 1993.
